Can Keto Help Combat Chronic Kidney Disease in Cameroon?

CKD is one of the major causes of morbidity and mortality in Cameroon. Approximately one in 10 adults suffer from the disease. However, most patients are not diagnosed and remain untreated. Therefore, more research is needed to better understand the epidemiological profile of CKD in the country.
The prevalence of CKD in Cameroon is highest among patients with diabetes, hypertension, and chronic glomerulonephritis. A third to half of the patients have a low eGFR and/or albuminuria. In addition, advanced age and obesity are associated with CKD.
Chronic kidney disease is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in Cameroon. Most CKD patients require dialysis. In addition, CKD is a major financial burden for the health system. There are limited services for treatment in the country. Providing effective therapies to CKD patients is a challenge in developing countries.
There is limited information on the economic cost of CKD in Cameroon. More studies are needed to determine the incidence of CKD and the mortality rate of ESRD. The cost of medical care for CKD patients increases substantially when comorbid conditions are present. Increasing the availability of treatment centers is one way to curtail the burden of ESRD.
There are also limited data on the socioeconomic profile of CKD. It is expected that a national registry for CKD patients will help foster research in this area.
This study aimed to describe the determinants of CKD in Garoua and Figuil cities. A structured questionnaire was used to assess the risk factors. Biochemical parameters, including glomerular filtration rate (GFR), lipid accumulation product index (LAPI), and visceral adiposity index (VAI) were examined.
Results showed that the prevalence of CKD in the general population ranged from 10 to 14.2%. The prevalence of CKD was higher in the rural and high-risk groups.

Can Cameroon’s Plants Help Manage Diabetes?

Medicinal plants have been used to treat diabetes in many countries around the world. Some of these plants have similar action to conventional antidiabetic drugs. Others have been reported to have hypoglycemic effects. Currently, more studies are needed to validate these effects.
A study was carried out in the Taza region of Morocco. The ethnobotanical survey aimed to document information about the plants used to treat diabetes. A total of thirty species of plants were identified. The survey was conducted from March to February 2020. It was conducted in the Darija language. Participants were asked to provide information about their demographics, their methods of using the plants, and the use of local names.
The most important plant for treating diabetes was Trigonella foenum-graecum L. Seeds and leaves of the plant are said to contain bioactive compounds. These compounds may be responsible for the antihyperglycemic properties. Other species, such as Opuntia streptacantha, are also classified as hypoglycaemic plants.
Patients used two or more plant species. The duration of treatment with the plants varied from a few days to several years. Most diabetic patients use the plant as a complement to conventional treatments. The percentage of diabetic patients who used the plants as complementary treatment ranged from 54% to 47.5%. Among the diabetic patients who used the plants, type 1 diabetes was reported in 52% of cases. This indicates that the patients had been diagnosed with diabetes for less than a year. The duration of the diagnosis also showed that the patients trusted the plants and used them regularly.
In addition, seven new plant species were mentioned in the international survey. These include Cytisus battandieri, Prunus dulcis (Miller), Glycyrrhiza glabra L., and Allium ampeloprasum L. The plant families that were represented in the study were Lamiaceae, Fabaceae, Cucurbitaceae, and Asteraceae. The results of the study indicate that patients in the Taza region are still relying on indigenous plants for their healthcare needs.
